Frequently Asked Questions
HOW DO I SUBMIT MY DOT MEDICAL CERTIFICATE IN TO THE STATE OF FLORIDA?

You can drive down to the local DMV and take your chances waiting in line or you can Self-Certify online. The self certification process is fairly easy and takes about 5 minutes. We suggest doing this on a smart phone because it is easier to upload the picture. You can use a PC and scanner but, you MUST save certificate as a JPEG. HOW CAN I CHECK MY HEARING?

Hearing is one of the four ZERO tolerance assessments. If you can not pass the test, you can not get medical clearance! Click on this link/sentence for an online hearing test.

WHAT DOES MY VISION HAVE TO BE FOR A CDL?

Vision MUST be 20/40 or better in EACH eye and is one of the ZERO tolerance assessments for the Federal Motor Carriers Safety Administration. Florida makes some specific exceptions for local drivers(not valid in other states).  To test your vision, click on this link/sentence.

WHAT DOES MY BLOOD PRESSURE NEED TO BE FOR A DOT PHYSICAL?

FMCSA requires blood pressure to be BELOW 140/90 with or without medication. It is important to note that the home/grocery store blood pressure machines are OFTEN not accurate! You may be eligible for a shorter term medical certificate depending on what stage the pressure falls and medication. We have personally witnessed strokes, blindness, loss of kidney and many other catastrophic issues due to high blood pressure. It continues to be one of the most problematic issues in our office. Personal message from Dr. Howard: “Strokes are forever, don’t be stupid! Get your blood pressure checked properly and take measures to get it under control!”

WHAT ARE THE REGULATIONS FOR DIABETES AND DOT PHYSICALS?

Well controlled, non-insulin diabetics are eligible for an unrestricted medical certificate under FMCSA rules. You MUST present an A1c  from within the last three months.

WHAT ARE THE RULES FOR CPAP?

FMCSA recommendations are 70% compliance for anyone with a CPAP. That means 4 hours per night 5 nights per week!

WHAT ARE REQUIREMENTS FOR SLEEP STUDIES RELATING TO APNEA OR CPAP?

NEW recommendations from FMCSA place the trigger for sleep apnea at a Body Mass Index(BMI) of 33. BMI is basically a ratio between your height and weight and you can check at this link/sentence. If your BMI is between 33 and 39, you will need to complete a Sleep Apnea Questionnaire. If your BMI is 40 or above, you will be REQUIRED to get a sleep study! This could shut down your ability to drive for 1-3 months. Suggestion from Dr. Howard: If you fall in to the over 40 BMI, Contact Phoenix Sleep Solutions at this link/sentence at least 3 months prior to expiration of current Medical Certificate.
